Steal this Idea, Please!
I established a Fund: Access Eau Claire, at the Eau Claire Community Foundation in honor of the 23rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. When it reaches $10,000 it will be able to make grants to local nonprofits to aid in their accessibility efforts. Almost every community has a community foundation and just working with them to start the fund raises the visibility of access issues in your community. Who knows where it will go from here. Read on for what I gave the Community Foundation to get them going.
One out of seven people has a disability and this rate rises to one out of two when the person is over sixty-five. The Americans with Disabilities Act applies to government and business entities, and in some situations to nonprofit organizations. The Access Eau Claire fund was established to assist Eau Claire nonprofits in enabling the full participation in community life of all persons.
Vision: full inclusion of people with disabilities in the leadership of and programs and services offered by Chippewa Valley nonprofit organizations.
Mission: To provide Chippewa Valley nonprofit organizations funds to initiate efforts toward full inclusion of people with disabilities in their leadership, programs and services. Initiatives funded could include (but are not limited to):
Staff training on disability access issues
Inclusive materials like adapted equipment
Sign language interpreter, captioner or aide services for a program
Materials in alternate formats like Braille
Special program initiative of the organization to reach out to people with disabilities
Sponsoring a speaker with a disability to educate a group about disability issues
Seed money for a fundraising campaign to make a major access improvement to a facility
Of course if you’d like to contribute to the Access Eau Claire fund, we’d love to have it. The check should be made out to the Eau Claire Community Foundation and designated for the Access Eau Claire fund. The address to mail it to is: Eau Claire Community Foundation
